Hunting illegally
It is really hard to prove people that hunt illegally. Unless the game warden watches them or has video tape of them doing it they could convict them easily. If they didn't see it then it mostly is someone tells the game wardens and from there they need enough evidence to convict them. There is so many people that hunt illegally. For all the people who do hunt illegally and don't get caught the people who do get caught should get punished severely to maybe scare other people. For some illegal hunting fines are just a slap on a wrist and it won't stop the people from hunting illegally. Not many people will stop hunting illegally unless stronger punishments are forced on the people. The main one I am talking about is the guy that shot a huge buck in Minnesota last November. He pleaded not guilty to three new accounts on January 22, 2010. He already pleaded not guilty to thirteen accounts. He already shot two deer before the world record with his bow. In Minnesota the law is to only shoot one deer a season with a bow. They are going to test his hunting jacket for gun powder to see if he shot it with a gun. He could easily lie and say he wore a different jacket. The buck is the biggest four-by-four ever found or shot in the world. If he is convicted I hope he doesn't just get a slap on the wrist especially when it's a world record. He has committed many previous convictions. He needs to be punished severely enough so he will not do it again, because he did keep doing things illegally. This needs to show everyone what can happen if you do hunt illegally to.

This post caught my eye because it's about hunting, which yes, I as a girl, go out and do.
ReplyDeleteI finally got my hunter safety a few years ago and now go out hunting as much as I can during deer season on my grandpa's land. After having gone through the hunter safety course, it is plain to see that there are a lot of rules and regulations that go along with hunting.
I am from North Dakota and have seen things like rule and regulation breaking happen first-hand. It's really not cool. It's like ruining someone's favorite hobby.
There are those of us that actually like to go out and hunt fair and then there are those people that pretty much just think it's a game.
I really don't think this guy that Parkman mentioned in his blog should be let off, especially if he has many previous offenses. And either should anyone else who breaks these "easy to follow" rules and regulations. Go out, have fun, kill your deer fairly. Don't ruin it for everyone else.
Eric, I think you bring up a very good topic that needs to be discussed. For years I have witnessed people breaking the rules and getting away with it, making hunting very unfair for those who do follow the rules. One violation that I have heard a lot about is deer baiting which has been increasing over the years. I do agree that poaching is a horrible thing to do but if your neighbors are baiting, why can’t you? You all have equal rights to hunt those deer. The only thing I see is some hunters getting upset because a baiter took their monster buck. I am sure if it was a 2X2 they really would not have cared. There are some people however that do hunt for the right thing, meat and keeping disease down.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Minnesota man that poached and killed a few deer without the right, that seems very wrong. As a daughter of a farmer, sometimes taking care of a few deer is how you look after your crops but I do not see his point, other than the size of the deer.
Hunting, much like most sports/hobbies, requires a certain set of rules and regulations. Without such rules, the very act of legal hunting will likely cease to be, especially since (in this case) deer numbers will be way down. I cannot admit to understanding illegal hunting--is it for the thrill of possibly getting caught or perhaps the thrill of getting away with something that is taboo? Illegal hunters do ruin the sport for all others and as such should not be let off easily for wrong doings--preferably losing his/her license. In these cases, setting a law similar to drinking and driving in Europe (once an individual is caught up in an alcohol-based accident, then that individual loses his/her license for life) would be an intelligent move on Game and Fish's part.
ReplyDeleteIllegal hunting also known as poaching as struck the area fairly closely. Within the last 2 weeks, ND Game Wardens have busted snow mobilers illegal hunting coyotes. They were observed by both ground and air troopers in an ongoing effort to stop poaching.
ReplyDeleteHunting illegal is a very big problem that continues to happen each and every year. As I am also a hunter, I have witnessed or heard many people that have poached. Game wardens try to do the best they can, but I feel that we don't have enough of them around. I feel that poaching is definitely one of the biggest problems and that we should give the people that we prove guilty of poaching not a slap on the wrist. We should make it a felony, instead of just a fine.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really great post Eric. This post caught my eye because it's about hunting. Which I love to do during season I go out hunting every year in Minnesota during deer season on my grandpa's land. I am from North Dakota and the rules and regulations change every year it seems like. It is annoying to follow all the different rules every year. I really don't think this guy in his blog should be let off. It doesn’t make it right that he has many previous offenses neither. That includes anyone else who breaks these rules or regulations. Don't ruin it for everyone else. There are people that actually like to go out and hunt fairly, and then there are those people that do it for the pleasure and do it illegally.
ReplyDeleteLike you said, hunting illegally will happen whether the people get caught for it or not. I am not a hunter but I do feel that the people who do hunt illegally should be punished as severe as their 'crime'. Like that man who shot a buck in minnesota. You stated that he had pleaded not guilty on thirteen previous accounts. This makes me wonder what is the jury thinking letting this man go with no punishment. What this man is doing is maker mattters worse for the hunters who actually legally hunt. There is a reason why there are rules and regualtions for hunting. I know in Hawaii there are seasons for hunting deer and seasons for diving for fish. If you catch a illegal fish, you will go to jail no doubt about it. Just like if people were to get caught too close to a turtle or monk seal, the police or any onlooker find someone doing so, you will go to jail. I feel that the laws should be that harsh because you can try and try and it still will not get through peoples head.
ReplyDeleteAs a hunter I hear about this kind of stuff a lot. I also think the punishments should be more strict to make people realize that it is not right. Most people hunt for fun and hope to get "the big one." I think that is what makes most people mad about it because I guess it can be "cheating" in a way. It is frustrating knowing people are doing this. The fines should be bigger.
ReplyDeleteHunting has been one of my family’s favorite things to do. I have obtained my North Dakota Whitetail license ever since I received my Hunter's Safety certificate. It is frustrating to hear about people that take hunting to this extreme and feel the need to obtain the best deer no matter what. I know that were I hunt there is a lot of Trophy Buck Hunters, but that is not the kind of hunters I think we need to always have out hunting. People need to understand the true importance of hunting and do it fairly. I strongly agree that illegal hunting regulations should be stronger, so occurrences like this one do not reoccur.
ReplyDeleteI think poaching is a big problem lately. I searching the internet for a story to write about and I found one about some teenage boys that were caught for poaching like seven deer. They were caught because someone saw them driving around with the deer in the back of their pickup. I did not feel that the charge that they were given was even that severe, they have $500 restitution per deer and they lost their guns. I have no problem with hunting and actually think it is a good way to help with the deer population, but I think that poachers need to have a harsh punishment. Like you said, it is hard to catch these people so then when they do, they should really punish those people so that other people will see that this is not a joke.
